Home is Ottawa, Canada, where I have been painting full time for six years, following my first career in international development.

I have strong connections with the semi-wilderness of Ontario, and the rural landscapes of Ireland, India and Jordan. These geographies and peoples have influenced my work and led me to an enduring captivation with abstract landscapes.

My work is held in private collections across Canada, the USA, Ireland, United Kingdom, Germany, Myanmar, and Australia.

I am fascinated with the ways we leave traces of our activity on rural lands – the paths, fences, fields – while the land in turn shapes us. Conversations about people’s local histories, their families and their work contribute to what I see in the land, what I remember about it, and how I choose to paint it.

I work on several paintings at the same time, leaving fresh layers to dry while moving on to the next. Each has its own direction and may end by looking quite different from others; but will certainly bear a relation to the group (common marks or symbols, similar colours, or a prevailing mood).
I begin with a high degree of spontaneity, working quickly and intuitively; layers will be built up, incorporating energetic lines and shapes, the addition and subtraction of paint, and occasional pieces of collage.
A complex history of layers is evident in all my work. By revealing or partially obscuring what came before, I create a deliberate parallel to stories of people and geographies.
